Diet for Hypoglycemia

Can someone who had type 2 diabetes but got rid of it with diet and exercise, now suffer from hypoglycemia?

My friend was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes years ago, but lost 50 poiunds through ongoing diet and exercise and the doc said she basically doesn't have it anymore. Then she started experiencing shakiness and other symptoms in between meals that goes away with food. The doctor said she is likely suffering from hypoglycemia. Thoughts/feedback on this?

  1. It is possible that your friend may be Hypoglecemic. But only your doctor can diagnose that. But your friend should check her blood sugar frequently with a Glucometer. That can show if the Type 2 Diabetes is still around. Just a suggestion.
  2. the type 2 don't go away it just goes inactive and will pop back up need to keep checking blood anyway
  3. My doctor told me the same thing after losing 95lbs, I do not show any signs of diabetes during blood work. However Type II diabetes does not go away, just eat a simple carb like a candy bar and test your sugar before and after. You will see that bar send your BS through the sky. Better to be safe and live like a Type II diabetic then take a chance and disregard all the healthy eating and living tips you do as a diabetic. harry http://thediabeticrunner.blogspot.com
  4. It's true that diabetes never goes away. And the hypoglycemia may be a sign that it is trying to come back. She should definitely continue to monitor her sugar.
  5. u cant get rid of diabetes once u get it youll always have it. When u loose wait it just steadys your blood sugar. and sweetie hypoglycemia is a form of diabetes
  6. I am a person who HAD diabetes, for many, many years. I started out taking a pill for diabetes then progressed to insulin. I have lost over 100 pounds through dieting and careful management of the foods that I eat. I was TOLD by my doctor that diabetes can indeed be reversed. Diabetes CAN be a thing of the past. I no longer take insulin and no longer take any medication for Daibetes. IF I were to resume my past lifestyle, I could easily suffer from Diabetes again. I have a strong family history of diabetes. BUT...you CAN reverse that trend, by always being careful of the foods you eat and test your glucose level on occasion to make sure that your glucose level remains under 140. Hypoglycemia became an issue for me when I lost all that weight, which is WHY my doctor finally removed me from insulin AND the diabetes pills. So the answer to your question is...YES you can suffer from hypoglycemia, after having diabetes AND you can suffer from hypo, even if you HAVE diabetes. Since I was told that I no longer had diabetes, I have to disagree with the answers you have received. I was just told that I was susceptible to getting diabetes again, if my physical condition (weight or poor eating habits) were to return. Congratulations to your friend for her weight loss. Tell her to keep a check on her glucose levels since she IS having symptoms of low blood levels. (Which her doctor already told her) Remind her to eat several small meals, everyday and carry a piece of candy with her at all times, if she has any more symptoms of shakiness, etc. Then...for her to have a small meal. This will help her glucose level AND her weight. Best Wishes to you both. Heather
  7. Interesting, the only way to be sure is to check a sugar level during one of these episodes, but if your friend never took any medications to lower blood glucose levels, it's unlikely that any hypoglycemia he has is related to his previous diagnosis of diabetes. Of course, it's a strange world out there and diseases don't always read medical textbooks, so I would start by trying to get some data on blood sugar during one of these episodes to get a better idea of what's going on.
  8. Once you are diabetic you are always diabetic Some can control it with diet very well and they know longer get high sugars But part of being diabetic is having low sugars if you do not eat enough If your friend would eat more whole grains and beans (not the fresh green and yellow) and lentils they will get into the system slower and prevent low sugars She needs to eat one hours before exercising to prevent the lows .She might want to consider eating seven snacks a day instead of eating meals . she should carry candy on her to treat the lows You basically need 15 G's of carbs quick ones with sugar and she should have a bracelet saying that she is diabetic so if she passes out the emt's will have an easier time treating her
