Diet for Hypoglycemia

hypoglycemia treatment?

My boyfriend had a hypoglycemic episode last night. I am usually with him when this happens and he is a type1 diabetic. I know to get him something with sugar and he can tell me what he needs and what to do but i still get panic-ed by this. How much sugar does he need? In a few minutes he returns to normal, however, when his sugar level crashes, its very fast. Is it better to drink something or have him eat something sweet? Also, I'm new to this, does anybody have any tips for me to be as well prepared as I can be. Thanks in advance

  1. Since he runs the risk of unconsicousness it isn't adivsed to give liquids. Any known diabetic should NEVER be without glucose tabs and this is your best source of glucose, you can also purchase small tubes of liquid glucose that can be squeezed into the cheek. If you don't have this a tube of cake decorating gel will work. You can buy great diabetic supplies like glucose tabs at any Walmart.
  2. he needs some fast sugar to get out of it, then he needs something like carbs to keep it from happening again. I usually gave milk with crackers once you gave the sugar. drinking is better, OJ with a couple of tablespoons of sugar.
  3. You can actually go to the pharmacy and purchase sugar tablets that he can carry with him. If his hypoglycemic episodes are recurrent, you need to find out why this is going on. Possibilities include: 1) taking insulin injections but skipping meals or eat less. 2) the insulin dose prescribed to him is too much or he is overdosing 3) he may be more active now and as a result lowers his sugar to the point that he may not need as much insulin. 3) his sugar may be better now from better food choices and he does not need as much insulin. 4) binging alcohol Perhaps a visit to the doctor and a blood sugar diary with premeal and postmeal blood sugar recording will be helpful.
